Not knowing anyone at the start of freshers was a really difficult time for me, so joining SVGE has been a real great joy! The range of games and strong inclusivity within the society has helped me throughout the year and has even introduced me some of the greatest friends I could ask for.
Samuel Tingson - Former member of SVGE
We're home to around 1800 members. Students, alumni, and even guests are welcome to join and play with us! We also have a women's and non binary chat to promote more diversity within the society.
We have a wide range of games played casually or competitively. Game reps of scenes run their own events on discord or in person, while the main committee setup larger scale game nights (mostly in pubs!). Anyone is welcome to join!
We understand the importance of welfare, even when it comes to gaming. That's why we heavily promote and encourage people to reach out if they need us - we are more than willing to lend a helping hand to our fellow gamers! We also have a wide range of support available, mostly available through SUSU. Please contact our welfare rep for more information.

SouthLANder is a annual tournament hosted and organised by SVGE. We aim to offer a fun and competitive tournament to add to the University esports scene. We bring invited universities together to compete in a heated battle - with the very best reaching LAN finals in the heart of the University of Southampton campus. Previously, the top team from each university competed in CSGO and League of Legends. This year, we are expanding our game base and increasing the number of universities invited, making the competition for our amazing prizes even better. Photo credits to: the NUEL
Collegiate tournaments are run year round in seasons, through NSE and NUEL, each providing weekly scheduled matches for almost every competitive esports title. These established hosts also boast the possibility of competing at LAN events for the most successful teams. Additional tournaments for extra prize pools and notoriety are also available for those teams seeking further competition. SVGE is involved in the majority of available tournaments, entering multiple teams for games such as CS:GO, Valorant, Rocket League and more. We aim to grow all our current scenes and expand our horizon into new games with fresh teams to enter their respective arenas.
Socials and Events
LANs
There's nothing more fun than gaming with friends. At our LAN events, you have the chance to play your favourite games in person with the SVGE community.
Tournaments
Get involved with the regularly run tournaments to beat the competition while having a load of fun with people within the SVGE.
Game Nights
Bring your laptop or a pack of cards to chill and play some games IRL with some snacks of course. We bring out the society VR set, consoles including Nintendo Switches and Xboxs, and our brand new racing wheel!
Streams
You have the chance to get involved in official SVGE streams like our annual Christmas charity fundraiser, in which we raised hundreds of pounds for our chosen charity.
Hobbit Socials
We run regular socials at the best pub in Southampton, The Hobbit! Come join us for a drink (alcoholic or not!) and some games. We usually have Mario kart up and running, sometimes the Xbox and also VR ;) It's good fun and we always have an excellent turnout, definitely come along and meet the committee and some new people!!
Servers & Game Hosts
As a member of the SVGE, you have access to official SVGE community servers for CS:GO, GMOD and Minecraft. There is a yearly vanilla Minecraft server that is very popular. We are always looking for more opportunities to host servers to enable social games to be played together with the community.
Watch Parties
We sometimes book out lecture halls, dim the lighting and get some snacks out to watch some of the finest movies created, such as Shrek, the Bee Movie and Cars. Great if you're looking for a chill evening but also some socialising too :)))
Women and Non-Binary
We run events for women and non binary people normally at scoops because we love a good waffle and a card game or two :)) We hope to create a welcoming environment in what everyone knows to be quite a male dominated hobby/society. Great chance to meet some great people and hopefully some friends with the same interests.
Check out our most popular games below!
Counter-Strike 2 (previously CS:GO) is one of the most active scenes within SVGE where we host a range of events such as small internal 5v5 pugs and mini-game evenings, as well as occasional larger events including tournaments, show matches, watch parties, in-person socials, and our annual flagship event "SouthLANder". Anyone can get involved no matter their skill level as there’s a great mix of both casual and competitive players, so it’s easy to find people to play with - and we compete in up to 3 university CS tournaments across 3 seasons per year where we have a wide variety of teams who are always looking for new players.
League of legends is considered as one of the most performant games at SVGE. With different teams, each welcoming any elo competes at the weekly NUEL and NSE series for the glory. We run several events whenever possible with internal interests from the people. Summoners here we all want to climb the ladder and destroy the enemy nexus as one big team. We qualified for nationals for NSE and we are more than happy to improve more and more in the competitive scenario, so what are you waiting for? Let's show those skills of yours in the Rift!
Minecraft is quite a casual scene in SVGE, we have a mc server that we play on as well as having regular weekly minigame tournaments with a variety of different game modes from build battles, to games like skywars and bedwars. We are a very welcoming scene, encouraging everyone to join in, build and take part. Whatever your interests, be it pvp, minigames, survival or even modded minecraft, everyone is welcome!
VALORANT is one of our most successful scenes at SVGE. We host 10 mans occasionally, with some of these being streamed to our Twitch channel. More often, we have in-person watch parties to spectate large VALORANT tournaments such as the VCT Masters in Reykjavik. Previously, we've had upwards of 5 teams concurrently competing in National UK University tournaments, with one even being crowned NUEL Spring 2021 Varsity Champions. These teams range across all ranks, both casual and competitive players, so there'll be no trouble finding a team if you want to play.
The SVGE Rocket League community is a great place for any epic Rocket League gamers, regardless of skill, to hang out in and play. We regularly partake in tournaments, have our own active 6Mans server and organise socials outside of the game. Don't be afraid to get in touch and say hello, we'd love to have you!
Overwatch is one of the staple games of SVGE. We have multiple teams of different skill levels competing in both NUEL and NSE series as well as a LAN event at Varsity. We also often run viewings of the Overwatch League both online and in-person as well as running pugs and custom games in which players are mixed into random teams with matches are played internally for fun if you’re up for a more casual experience. Hope to see you join us! Remember, the world could always use more heroes!
R6 is a relatively small yet cosy and very active corner to SVGE. 10 mans are run regularly together with other universities including Portsmouth, LJMU and some others. Close to daily we queue to practise in a competitive setting with different teammates. Even those who aren't looking for a competitive environment can get involved with R6 as we are often playing Ranked/Casual matchmaking. We currently have two teams that compete twice a week in competitive in NUEL and NSE leagues.
We have a nice mix of casual and competitive events in our Pokémon community. From tournaments to movie nights and Pokémon go outings. We're very open to having people come join us to get into competitive or even just to hang out. We do all kinds of stuff so always feel free to say hi.
Destiny is one of the best scenes here at SVGE! We run weekly events like raids, dungeons and crucible customs. We're open to all players, even casual and inexperienced gamers like BasicAxolotl. We don't have a competitive scene (as none really exists) but there are some very capable players active in the scene, so there'll be people available to play with you or help you regardless of what activities you are interested in.
Switch is a very broad scene as there are many games on the switch so there's something here for everyone, from casual games such as animal crossing, to more competitive games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. We have a wide skill level of smash players as well as other games like Mario Kart and splatoon so there's always someone to play against. If you like any particular switch games you will always find people here who like them too.
We cover all the games under the Paradox Interactive banner, and the Civilisation banner, for all map-staring enthusiasts out there. With (mostly) weekly hosts of a variety of games, whether it be EU4, Stellaris, HoI4, Vic2, CK3 or Civ 5 and 6, there's something on for any fan. We're open for all, whether completely new or completely addicted!
The SVGE Team Fortress 2 scene runs weekly online meetups playing casual, competitive, Mann vs Machine and a variety of community game modes. We sometimes run small events, such as MGE tournaments, with TF2 item prizes! We're mostly a casual scene, so come join if you want to hang out and play some TF2!
Halo is a new scene within SVGE, forming only this year (2023). We like to play any/all of the halo titles, from all games in the Master Chief Collection, Halo wars 1 & 2 and the new Halo: Halo Infinite. We have competed in NUEL/NSE and now the "newer" formed University Halo League, and have achieved some great results, including a 1st place win in 2022 Winter Season in 4v4s and a couple of 1st place wins in duos. We are always looking for new players to help out with our tournements and are open to all players of any skill level, even if you are brand new to halo! Due to the size of the scene in general, we often participate in community events with other unis such as running custom games, big team battles and 8s!
The SVGE osu! scene is one of the largest uni osu! scenes in the UK. We host weekly multis, showmatches with other universities and other in-house events with prizes. All modes and ranks welcome!
We host weekly hearthstone meetings consisting of standard matches, tavern brawls and games of battlegrounds including some of our own custome rulesets. There will also be year long casual competitions covering all formats found in the game from standard to wild to twist to races on the singleplayers modes. Players of all skill levels and card collection levels are welcome to join in.
Many other games regularly played such as Dota, Final Fantasy and more. Join us on discord!
Livestreaming is a great way to bring a community together. This is why the SVGE is here to provide guidance and to help promote your livestreaming channels. By joining the UoSVGE team on twitch, your channel will be promoted on the discord server whenever you go live! With the society, there will also be opportunities to stream to the UoSVGE channel to help build our community and sometimes raising money for charity.
As a society, we produce, edit and publish a range of video content on our range of platforms. This can be stream highlights, game fragmovies, funny montages, southLANder highlights or even game shows! Within the society, we have a huge amount of talent, and drawing on that means that we have a great production team for whatever show we want to put on.
